Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are drugs known to treat anxiety. Aside from that, they are also useful at treating other conditions such as Insomnia and seizures. They work by reducing GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain, a neurotransmitter chemical that allows nerves to communicate with each other. Such effectivity led to the various medical applications of Benzodiazepines in anesthetics, sedation, for muscle relaxation, nausea and vomiting, and even panic attacks. But like other effective brain-effective medicines, they have a high potential to be addictive.

*Signs of Benzodiazepine addiction may include:

  • Failure or inability to reduce doses or stop using benzodiazepines
  • Feeling unable to function without benzodiazepines
  • Increased tolerance of the effects of benzodiazepines, requiring higher doses to achieve the same outcome
  • Withdrawal symptoms (including depersonalization, anxiety, depression, hypersensitivity, physical tremors, and sleep disturbances) when doses of the drugs are reduced or eliminated
